Happy IWD! Today we celebrate women as champions, leaders and an integral part of society. This holiday has been acknowledged since the early 1900′s and has more recently become more focused on granting recognition to women for their political, economic and social achievements. In light of this the Red Earth staff would like to especially highlight the work of JaneRose Naliaka Muyoma, an artist and independent small business owner in Nairobi, Kenya with whom we partner.
JaneRose and I met for the first time in January and apart from her great creative ability, excellent craftsmanship, and passion, she is incredibly generous and just a downright lovely person. Her integrity is evident, as we have seen first hand, in every aspect of the business she founded and operates. She is an example to her community that powerful women with a vision can make great inroads into the world of business by operating from a place of gentleness and kindness. We are honored to know her as a friend and so proud of her today as the whole world gathers to celebrate JaneRose and enterprising women like her. We remain committed to helping facilitate the growth of her business and look forward to showcasing more of her beautiful pieces for Red Earth Trading Co. Just a thought as each of us are making our way home for the holidays. Home, back to where it all began. A year older, perhaps a year wiser, but not forgetting the childhood wonder of this holiday.
When we were young, we celebrated things properly – with all the joy and enthusiasm we could muster. If I could give each of you a gift it would be that this holiday, among your friends and family, wherever you are, you remember that feeling of being a wide-eyed kid at Christmas.

It’s a chilly morning in Nashville, TN!
This is my favorite season. Sure, who doesn’t miss late summer nights on a good porch and swimming on a blazing August afternoon? But I don’t think we give winter enough credit. The buzz of activity that the summer brings slows gradually, and when the temperature drops and drives us indoors, we suddenly find the time to be introspective. I’m reading a lot these days. I’m drinking a lot of coffee and eating a lot of soup. I’m enjoying being home. I’m finishing my Christmas gift list this week.
I remember one of my favorite gifts I’ve ever received came one Christmas several years ago. It was simple – just a thin red blanket that I have used and loved year round, and whenever I see it, my sweet friend comes to mind. In the spirit of that gift, allow me to suggest one of Red Earth’s kikoys, traditional woven wraps that may be worn as a scarf or used as a throw. A cozy reminder of your love for that one person on your list. An appropriate gift for anyone – guys and gals, old and young. Grab a couple for hostess gifts as well for those holiday parties you attend!

Hey everyone, we are really excited about being part of the 4th Annual CREMA Christmas! This Saturday, December 10th from 2 to 6 PM, CREMA has invited us and a few local artisans to sell some great gifts at their shop. This year’s holiday will again focus on serving Nashville’s homeless community with 20% of proceeds from the event going to Safe Haven and People Loving Nashville. Last year, the event raised more than $2,000 for the local organizations.
So come join us in supporting our community and take the chance to purchase a unique gift with a story.

PS – This is a great idea for gift wrap that I recently stumbled across! Wrap your presents this year in beautiful scarves from a vintage store or antique fabric. No wasted paper and the recipient will be sure to appreciate the extra effort! After all – presentation is important!
